A garage reset goes faster with two people and a plan. Here is a simple order that works for most two-car garages, from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.
Saturday morning: empty and sort
Pull everything onto the driveway. Make three piles: keep, donate and toss. Be honest about the things that have not moved since last year. Sweep the floor while it is empty, because you will not get another chance.
Saturday afternoon: tools first
Tools are the things you look for most, so give them a home first. A rolling tool chest keeps hand tools in drawers and moves to wherever you are working. Put it near an outlet and a light. Hang bikes and long-handled tools on the wall to free up floor space.
Sunday morning: cabinets for the rest
Tall garage cabinets take care of paint cans, car care, sports gear and the camping chairs. Closed doors keep dust off and make the garage look finished. Put the heaviest things on the lowest shelves.
Sunday afternoon: move the yard stuff out
If the mower, the soil bags and the patio cushions are still taking up room, they may belong outside. A storage shed or a deck box gives them their own place, and the car gets its spot back.
Before you buy, measure the wall space and the ceiling height where each piece will go. It takes five minutes and saves a return.
